We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. 

We read and write poetry beacuse we are members of the human race. 

And the human race is filled with passion. 

Medicine, law, business, engineering; these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. 

But poetry, beauty, romance, love; these are what we stay alive for. 

 

To quote from Whitman: 

 

"O me, O life 

of the questions of these recurring

Of the endless trains of the faithless

Of cities filled with the foolish

What good amid these, O me, O life?

"Answer: That you are here.

That life exists and identity.

That are powerful play goes on,

and you may contribute a verse

시가 아름다워서 읽고 쓰는 게 아니야.

우리가 시를 읽고 쓰는 이유는 우리가 인류의 구성원들이기 때문이지.

인류는 열정으로 가득 차 있어.

의학, 법, 기술: 이런 것들은 고귀한 일들이고 삶을 유지하는 데 꼭 필요한 것들이지.

하지만 시, 아름다움, 낭만, 사랑: 이런 것들은 우리가 살아가는 이유라네.

 

월트 휘트먼의 시를 인용해볼게.

 

"오, 나여! 오, 삶이여!

끊임없이 반복되는 이 질문들

믿음없는 자들의 끝없는 행렬에 대해

노란 숲 속에 길이 두 갈래로 났었습니다.
나는 두 길을 다 가지 못하는 것을 안타깝게 생각하면서,
오랫동안 서서 한 길이 굽어 꺾여 내려간 데까지,
바라다볼 수 있는 데까지 멀리 바라다보았습니다.

그리고, 똑같이 아름다운 다른 길을 택했습니다.
그 길에는 풀이 더 있고 사람이 걸은 자취가 적어,
아마 더 걸어야 될 길이라고 나는 생각했었던 게지요.
그 길을 걸으므로, 그 길도 거의 같아질 것이지만.
